Why I Overthink Text Messages and Conversations in Relationships

Overthinking messages is one of the most common struggles people bring to therapy. A single text can lead to hours of analysis, doubt, and anxiety about what it “really meant.”

This often happens when your mind is trying to create certainty in situations that feel emotionally uncertain. You may find yourself replaying conversations, scanning for meaning, or imagining worst-case scenarios.

In therapy, we look at the pattern underneath this experience:

  • What does uncertainty feel like for you emotionally?

  • When did you first learn to be on “alert” in relationships?

  • What do you tend to assume when you don’t get clarity?

Understanding these patterns helps reduce the intensity of overthinking over time, not by forcing it away, but by changing how you relate to it.
